At first glance, the most noticeable contrast between Medicine and Dentistry in Canada is the public-private divide. However, the true disparity lies in the approach to patient care and direction. Both disciplines involve patients either seeking treatment for specific concerns or undergoing regular exams and screenings, leading to treatment based on the exam outcomes.

Dentistry stands out with its emphasis on regular visits, which often results in improved oral and overall health. Dentists actively collaborate with their patients, educating them about their individual needs and offering guidance on proper at-home oral care. This proactive approach aims to prevent issues like cavities, gum disease, and worn teeth while also foreseeing potential future problems. Patients who maintain regular dental visits benefit from positive reinforcement, as hygienists closely monitor their oral health, applauding what works well and providing new tools to enhance home care where necessary. As a result, consistent dental care often leads to healthier, more beautiful smiles.

In contrast, the medical healthcare model does not foster the same patient-provider relationship as Dentistry. Even with regular visits to a physician’s office, patients are rarely held accountable for diminishing health outcomes or coached on how to better manage them. Instead, they are often prescribed medications to manage symptoms indefinitely, leading to potential side effects and additional health concerns over time. The medical system lacks the long-term partnerships and resources necessary to guide patients towards optimal overall health.

It is important to note that the individuals working within the medical system are bright, caring, and hard-working professionals, and their efforts are appreciated at every level of service.  We all have friends and family that work within our healthcare system.  They aren’t given the credit they deserve for the work they do.  However, the fundamental structure of the medical system differs significantly from that of dental professionals in Canada.

At Tooth Works, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive dental services that make us proud. Our team of dental professionals places a strong emphasis on maintaining the optimal dental health of our loyal patients. Through a proactive and collaborative approach to care, we strive to ensure the best possible outcomes for each individual we serve.
