A long-lasting choice, implant dentistry brings you as close to growing new teeth as is possible.

Placed in the bone in the same position as the roots that once supported teeth, implants offer the strength and function of natural teeth, and they have a natural appearance. An excellent choice for one or more missing teeth, implants are a superior alternative to dentures or bridges. Dentures lack the strength of natural teeth, while bridges marry multiple teeth together, creating hygiene challenges. Neither of these are a factor when it comes to individual teeth replaced by dental implants.

It’s not just hockey players — many people seek dental implants to replace teeth which have been removed for various reasons; teeth may have decayed past the point of salvaging, or broken during everyday use, or in an accident. Implants can be a long lasting, comfortable alternative to removable dentures or dental bridges.

Dental implants may be right for you if you

  • Have one or more missing teeth

  • Have adequate bone to secure the implants or are able to have a bone graft

  • Don’t have health conditions that will affect bone healing

  • Don’t love to, or refuse to wear a denture

  • Want to improve your speech

  • Want to improve your ability to chew

  • Want to improve the esthetics of your smile

The Process

After a consultation, if you’ve decided to proceed with implants, Dr. Withanachchi will develop a plan for your implant surgery and restoration. Digital impressions and 3D images will be taken, to create models of your teeth and jaw. We’ll also review your medical history, including any medical conditions and medications, to ensure that implants are the best option for you, and to minimize the risk of infection or implant rejection. The chances of dental implant failure is quite low, as implant surgeries average over a 95% success rate!

Many patients find the procedure of implant placement easier than they anticipated. Various types of sedation may fit your comfort level best, so feel free to discuss them with Dr. Withanachchi. Typically, we perform implant surgeries with only local anesthetic, as there is very little trauma involved in the process. Once the area is numb, experienced hands carefully place the implant, using a digitally generated, highly accurate, surgical guide. A small hole in the gums provides a path for threading a small implant cylinder into place. The sterile piece settles into a precise location, and a smooth cover protects the implant during the healing period.

In some cases, a temporary or permanent crown may be inserted at the time of surgery. Cases involving multiple implants often proceed the same way, with more temporary options available so you can smile confidently immediately.

Aftercare

Unlike most other surgeries, there is minimal downtime and pain following dental implant surgeries.  Most commonly, our patients stop taking pain medications within 24 hours of their surgery, as they find there is no lingering discomfort! You can return to work within 24-48 hours of your implant surgery.

Implants can’t withstand normal bite forces until the bone has attached firmly to the implant. Dr. Withanachchi will help you determine what will work best during the initial healing period, and ensure you’re still able to function normally, while protecting your implants. On average, we will “put teeth” on your dental implants 10 weeks after the date of surgery.

Determining Your Expected Cost

The cost of dental implant services involves several critical factors unique to each patient. A fee quoted without careful evaluation can be inaccurate. Comparing fees between dental practices may not account for the difference in the quality of materials used, along with the training of the doctor performing this highly technical service. Dr. Withanachchi customizes a treatment plan after he has spent time analyzing all of the unique data pertaining to you.

One of the reasons we offer free consultations to patients interested in pursuing implants or any other dental treatment, is to give you a ‘nothing to lose’ opportunity to find out what your plan can entail. You’ll meet with Dr. Withanachchi to discuss your smile goals and allow him to assess your dental situation. At that time, we’ll be able to give you a more accurate approximation of the cost. We can submit pre-authorization claims to your insurance provider at this time — ensuring that if you decide to seek treatment, you know how much will be covered by your plan. If needed, we also offer financing, allowing patients to divide their treatment costs into monthly payments.

One thing remains absolutely certain: you’ll have an opportunity to achieve ideal outcomes with modern implant dentistry. That means years of natural function, and a smile that  will fill you with pride. We look forward to discussing how we can partner together to achieve your dental goals!

Yours in better dental health,
