Ageism in dentistry is a prevalent issue that we see on a routine basis. We find it’s self-inflicted. Some of our patients believe that after a certain age, optimal dental care is not worth it anymore. However, at our practice, we believe that every patient, at every age, deserves ideal dentistry.
We often hear our patients say, “At my age? No, I don’t think so.” These remarks seem to stem from the belief that their “best” years are behind them and that it’s not worth investing in their dental health.
We challenge our patients to consider a few things when they make these comments.
-
Life expectancy is now north of 80 years in Canada. This means that for the majority of our patients, there are many years left to enjoy great dental health.
-
Having solid teeth enables one to eat all types of food, which allows for better nutrition. Better nutrition equates to better overall health.
-
Many seniors enjoy socializing and dining, and great dental health allows them to continue to participate in these activities.
-
A great smile instills confidence. When we smile, physiologic changes happen that actually make us feel better. Therefore, we should smile often, and never stop smiling, regardless of our age.
We believe that great dentistry knows no age limit, and we don’t participate in ageism in dentistry. Our practice is committed to providing the best possible dental care to every patient, no matter their age. We offer optimal solutions when it comes to the treatment of all of our patients.
